Between Streets & Summits: Oaxaca Urban Hike
Trip highlights
Short on time or just arriving in Oaxaca City? This private urban hike blends culture, geography and movement into one well-paced experience.
Starting in front of Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, you’ll walk through some of the city’s most iconic streets before climbing the famous Escaleras del Fortín — a 218-step ascent gaining approximately 55 meters in elevation.
From there, the route continues past the Auditorio Guelaguetza and into the trails of Cerro del Fortín, where nature and panoramic city views come together.
Hike details
The hike is rated easy to moderate: manageable for active travelers, but with enough elevation and steps to feel like a real workout.
Trekking poles are provided, and while hiking shoes are ideal, sturdy tennis shoes with good soles work perfectly well.
Why this experience
This experience connects urban Oaxaca with nature in a way most visitors never experience.
At the Dos Piedras viewpoint, enjoy a well-earned break with snacks and water before descending back into the city through local neighborhoods and markets.
To complete the experience, visit Mercado Sánchez Pascuas for a tasting of fresh local fruits — some familiar, others unique to Oaxaca — while gaining an authentic glimpse into everyday local life.
Not recommended for: individuals with high blood pressure, knee or back issues, or limited physical condition.
