Hierve el Agua at First Light
Trip highlights
Set out at 7:00 am from Oaxaca City to experience Hierve el Agua ahead of the crowds and heat. After a scenic drive through the Tlacolula Valley, meet a local guide and begin a short-to-medium hike designed for early risers.
Along the trail, learn about endemic plants, trees, and their uses in traditional medicine. With some luck, you may spot roadrunners or signs of nocturnal wildlife while vultures soar overhead and swallows appear seasonally.
After the hike, cool off in the natural pools before heading to a traditional Oaxacan breakfast stop. This half-day experience is designed to return you early to Oaxaca City while still giving you a meaningful, active morning.
Inclusions
Not included: breakfast and personal expenses.

Itinerary
Total duration: approximately 6.5 hours.
Why this experience
Led by a federally certified Oaxaqueño interpreter of Zapotec or Mixtec heritage, this experience goes beyond the typical visit by offering a respectful, community-centered approach grounded in real relationships with local people.
The mineral “waterfalls” were formed over hundreds or thousands of years, evidence of ancient geological processes tied to a time when this region was once underwater.
